Silk & Scale

Silk & Scale

Silk & Scale is an educational table-top board game I created about building your own business in the competitive fashion industry.

Systems-thinking is at the very center of Silk & Scale and is a means for players to freely explore and craft systems, addressing topics such as labor and interconnections.

Meaningful and impactful games are what I strive to create. Each element of the game was thoughtfully designed and tested to create an informative and fun experience.

Playing the game walks you through gathering the necessary components to bring a fashion item to market. It puts an emphasis on the larger process behind a single item, answering questions such as: “who's making it?” or “where does it come from?”

Game Design

Silk and Scale’s gameplay focuses on creating your own well-balanced, functional system through team-building as the core mechanic. Players will build and manage their own fashion house to compete in The Market, the final destination. The board is designed to be free-roam and encourages players to travel in search of new characters to recruit.

The team-building mechanic was something I specifically put a lot of time and effort into. I ensured that there were multiple ways to win the game through a number of different character combinations and playing strategies.

Character Art & Design

Silk & Scale currently features over 30 hand-drawn characters that I designed and created.

These characters were inspired by fashion industry jobs, each with a unique mechanic reflective of their work. In order to emphasize the individual as a part of a system, I designed every character to look and play differently whilst keeping certain aspects of them consistent. The character system highlights the trade offs in the fashion industry.

I am presenting Silk & Scale as an example of my abilities in development and design.

In Progress

Silk & Scale is currently under further development and will hopefully be available for purchase in the future, so I will not be fully presenting it in my portfolio.

Please contact me if you’d like more information on the project.
